Tom
is billeted with his Aunt and Uncle whilst his brother Peter recovers
from measles. While staying in their flat, Tom discovers the house
has a magical garden which only appears in the 13th hour after midnight.
Having entered the garden he meets Hatty, a Victorian child who
is also looking for a friend.
This Victorian garden is a world of dreamlike transparency, designed
to evoke both the impressionists of the late 19th century and the
bright new palette of colours which started to appear in the 1950s.
The set is "framed" with a gold proscenium arch which,
combined with the two-dimensional scenery used in the garden, echoes
traditional Victorian style sets. |
