Know
what to expect when you're expecting . . . Griff and Lydia Savage
are expecting a baby. Their first. The time is right: the promotion,
the house, the new car. They've planned ahead and conceived right
on schedule. Their little stranger. Everything is just as it's
supposed to be.
Little children
aren't supposed to want to hurt their mummies and daddies .
. .
I was presented
with a new set of challenges for this show, namely a set which
could be erected and struck in a fifteen minute turn-around
by two actors and the director for the whole of the festival
period.
At the beginning
of the play, Griff and Lydia have been decorating. I wanted
the fragmentary nature of the set to echo the false 'completeness'
of Griff and Lydia's private world, the reality being that crucial
pieces - such as trust - were missing from their relationship.
The fragmentation also served to underscore Griff's gradual
departure from reality.
