This play was the opener to the 2006 Summer Rep Season at the
Lyceum Theatre, Crewe. I had to produce four different sets
in four weeks, with a day-and-a-half turn around between each
show.
Most of
the colours and patterns used on the set were a nod to the style
of Elvis' early glory days in the late 1950's and early 1960's.
However, the kitchen had been decorated "before Dad's accident"
and has subsequently run to seed.
Both the director and I wanted a suitably impressive Las Vegas
style ending to the show. In the final number, Elvis enters
through the smoke filled kitchen door, the black drape behind
the flats was revealed as a star-cloth, two mirror balls were
dropped in and finally the whole star cloth was flown out to
reveal the cyclorama which the Lighting Designer lit with moving
lights.
